The 59th Street BridgeSong 五十九号街桥歌

 2006-10-23 12:32:36

  Introduction

Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel met each other in middle school and recorded their first hit song“Hey, Schoolgirl,” when they were fifteen years old. As singers and songwriters, they have remained popular with university students for over forty-four years. Is it likely that their poetic music will still be played a hundred years from now?

Sunlight that travels through an old pane of glass will often be unevenly bent, creating places of slightly greater brightness and areas that are slightly less bright on whatever surface that finally reflects the light. These “dapples,”or variations in brightness, are of a subtle nature. So are the songs of Simon and Garfunkel.

This song was written early one morning after Paul Simon drove his expensive Aston Martin automobile across the 59th Street Bridge in the city of New York. He was beginning to enjoy his fame and money and he realized his life was a bit ironic. Years earlier, when Paul had lived in Paris with a lot less money, he would often shout,“Capitalist pig!”at the tourists going by on tour boats that cruised up and down the Seine River.

His frame of reference had changed. Enjoying life and having money didn't seem all that bad anymore…Funny how that works out, isn't it?  Why be jealous of what others have? If you really want it, why not use your brain and go out and get it? What more needs to be said?

  The 59th Street Bridge Song

  (Feelin' Groovy)

Words and Music by Paul Simon

Vocals: Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel

Slow down, you move too fast.

You've got to make the morning last.

  Just kickin' down the cobblestones,

Looking for fun and Feelin' Groovy.

Ba da da da da da

  Feelin' Groovy

  Hello lamppost, what cha knowing?

I've come to watch your flowers growing.

Ain't cha got no rhymes for me?

  Dootin' doo-doo,

  Feelin'  Groovy.

Ba da da da da da

  Feelin'  Groovy.

Ba da da da da da

I got no deeds to do,

  No promises to keep.

I'm dappled and drowsy and ready to sleep.

Let the morning time drop all its petals on me.

  Life, I love you,

  All is Groovy.

  Ba da da da
