Introduction
Benjamin Earl Soloman, better known as Ben E. King, was born on September 28,1938 in Henderson, North Carolina. At age of 11 he moved with his family to Harlem in New York City. King sang in church choirs during his youth and formed his own band in high school. His father's restaurant in Harlem was the site for his first professional performances.
In 1956 King joined the singing group known as the “Crowns”, which in 1959 changed their name to the “Drifters”. King then sang and co-wrote his first hit song,“There Goes My Baby. ” King went on to sing the popular “Save the Last Dance for Me,”“I Count the Tears,”and “Spanish Harlem. ”
In 1961 King worked with Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller to compose the soulful“Stand By Me,” which King then sang and turned into an immediate hit song. King has a versatile blend of Rhythm and Blues songs and smooth vocal style that also appeals to Pop fans. During the 1960's King kept busy with many exciting concert hall and TV performances, both in America and abroad.
Later he went on to record the hits,“Don't Play That Song,”“That's When It Hurts,”“I(Who Have Nothing)”and “Supernatural Thing-Part I. ”
With the 1986 re-release of“Stand by Me”as the theme song of the movie with the same title, King's popularity again rose as younger audiences began to sing along with the stark melody that had previously captivated their parents a quarter of a century earlier.
The Columbia movie “Stand by Me,” with fledgling director Rob Reiner, tells the story of a group of young teen-age boys trying to grow up. What should you believe in and be willing to stand up for in America during the early 1960's? Do you need to have a difficult time in finding your own answers to these questions, or can we help each other out as we travel down the bumpy road of our lives? Does a shared private space go a long way to make your life more enjoyable, and problems smaller?
Stand by Me
Vocal: Ben E. King
When the night has come,
And the land is dark,
And the moon is the only light we'll see,
No, I won't be afraid.
Oh, I won't be afraid.
Just as long as you stand, stand by me.
So darling, darling, stand by me.
Oh, stand by me.
Oh, stand, stand by me, stand by me.
If the sky that we look upon should tumble and fall
Or the mountain should crumble to the sea,
I won't cry; I won't cry.
No, I won't shed a tear,
Just as long as you stand, stand by me.
And darling, darling, stand by me.
Oh, stand by me.
Whoa, stand now, stand by me
Stand by me.
Darling, darling, stand by me,
Oh, stand by me.
Oh, stand now, stand by me, stand by me.
Whenever you're in trouble,
Just stand by me.
Oh, stand by me, whoa!
